When their feelings and their choice do not match
Can someone love you and still choose someone else?
Yes. Someone can have real feelings for you and still choose another person. Feelings are only one part of a relationship. Readiness, courage, timing, loyalty, and daily action matter too. Their choice does not prove that you were not enough. It does tell you which relationship they are willing to live in now, and that truth matters more than the love they may keep hidden.
This question hurts because either answer seems to take something away from you. If they did not love you, then the connection may feel false. If they did love you, then why were you not chosen? You can spend months trying to solve that contradiction as if the right explanation will make the ending less real.
The contradiction becomes easier to hold when you stop treating love as a complete decision. Love is a feeling and a bond. A relationship is also a set of choices. It asks someone to be available, tell the truth, protect trust, make room for you, and keep choosing the same future when the first rush is gone.
A feeling can be real and still be too small to build a life around.
Why would someone choose another person if they love you?
Sometimes the other relationship is easier. It may already have a home, history, family approval, money, or a shared routine. Sometimes they are afraid of the depth they feel with you. Sometimes they want two things and choose the one that asks less of them. Sometimes their feelings for you are real, but their feelings for the other person are real too.
None of those reasons make the choice harmless. They only explain why feeling does not always become commitment. A person can miss you and still avoid the conversation. They can regret losing you and still protect the life they chose. They can call you the love of their life and continue building a life where you have no safe place.
In my October 20 message, I spoke about regret after someone chose a tempting or forbidden situation. What matters outside the message is the line between regret and repair. Regret is private. Repair requires truth, accountability, and a choice that changes what happens next.
Their choice is not a score of your worth
When someone chooses another person, the mind turns it into a contest. Was the other person more beautiful, easier, calmer, richer, or more lovable? That comparison gives you work to do because work feels less helpless than grief. If you can find the flaw in yourself, you can imagine fixing it and changing the result.
But people do not choose partners through a fair ranking system. They choose from their values, fears, habits, responsibilities, and level of readiness. A person may choose what is familiar over what is healthy. They may choose stability over intensity. They may choose the relationship they have already promised to protect. Their decision belongs to their life. It is not an objective verdict on yours.
You do not need to become better than the person they chose. You need a relationship in which you are not waiting for your value to win a private competition.
What if they say they still love you?
Listen to the whole sentence, including the action around it. 'I love you, but I am staying with them' is not a promise. It is a boundary, even when it is spoken with tears. 'I love you, but I cannot give you a relationship' is painful clarity. Do not remove everything after the word love because it is the part you wanted most.
If they keep confessing feelings while asking you to wait in secret, the confession may serve them more than it serves you. It gives them comfort, hope, and access without requiring a decision. You are allowed to say that love without an available relationship is not enough for you.
- 01
Ask what is available now
Do not plan from a future they have not chosen. Name the relationship they can offer today.
- 02
Protect the third person's reality
If they are committed elsewhere, do not build intimacy through secrecy. A love story does not become clean because the feelings are strong.
- 03
Choose your own limit
Decide whether friendship, distance, or no contact protects you best. A limit is not punishment. It is how you stop living inside someone else's indecision.
Can they come back and choose you later?
They can. People end relationships, face consequences, grow, and make different choices. But possibility is not a safe place to wait. If they return, judge the return by what is true then. Are they fully available? Have they ended the other relationship honestly? Can they name why they chose as they did? Are they ready to rebuild trust at your pace?
Do not give today's years to a future version of someone. If that version arrives, you can decide then. Until it does, the current choice is the only choice you can build your life around.
The question that gives your power back
Instead of asking whether their love was real, ask whether the relationship offered to you is real enough. Does it include honesty, availability, respect, and a shared direction? Can you live inside it without hiding, proving, or waiting for another person to lose?
You may never get a perfect explanation for how they could love you and choose someone else. You do not need one before you choose yourself. Their feelings can be true. Your need for a love that arrives in action can be true too.
Common questions
Can someone truly love you and be with someone else?
Yes. Feelings can remain while someone chooses a different relationship. That does not create an available partnership with you. Their present choices tell you what they are willing and able to build.
Why was I not enough for them to choose me?
Their choice is not a fair score of your worth. People choose from timing, fear, history, responsibility, values, and readiness. You can be deeply lovable and still be unavailable to each other in a healthy way.
Should I wait if they say they love me?
Do not wait only for a feeling. Ask what relationship they can offer now and whether there is a clear, ethical plan. A confession without availability can keep you suspended for a long time.
Can they love both people at once?
People can hold feelings for more than one person. A committed relationship still requires choices, agreements, and honesty. Multiple feelings do not excuse secrecy or make every arrangement fair.

If you need to know whether this has a real future
Their feelings may be part of the story, but your decision needs more than a feeling. A focused reading can look at the connection, what is available now, and whether this path is asking you to keep going or let go.
